Musicians interpret musical scores
It doesn’t mean, they just play whatever they like
although, some have tried.

There are things in black and white
plotted between lines that are interpreted,
not merely played.

What could that possibly mean?, you say,
are they not the same?

Well,
you stretch for a pause,
thinking how to say,

Musicians have tools outside the score
that they are permitted to use.

it’s about timing and flow,
sonic dynamics, the pose, there’s
always room to be clever,
and there’s the room,
it’s never the same
from day to day.

It’s not just that the notes that are played.

Music does it’s fingered magic
like the harpist with her harp,
touching chords of feelings
with the gentlest of touch.

It’s how the notes are shaped
that the musician is able to impart
her take on life, on love, on fate.

Knowing the score is only the half of it.

We all know how things will end.
It’s what happens on the way that counts.
